Canon 50mm f/1.8

It feels like a cheap piece of plastic and it is only 85 euro, but for this price it's a perfect lens. Stopped down to f/3.5 it's sharp in the corners. The field of view is 25° x 17°.

Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM

A beautifull lens for holidays and around the house, but absolutely not good for astrophotography. Stars in the corners are like comets...
www.dpreview.com tested this lens in januari 2008. It was only recommended with reservations. One of the conclusions was: "Poor performance at wideangle, with marked barrel disortion, high levels of light falloff, and intense green/magenta chromatic aberration". See: Lensreview Canon 17-85
This is an 8 minutes exposure of the center of the Milkyway at 800 ISO, focal length set to 17 mm, aperture stopped from f/4.0 to f/5.6
