De Irisnevel is een reflectienevel rond een heldere ster van de zevende magnitude, die ongeveer tien maal zwaarder is dan onze Zon. Het blauwe licht van de ster wordt gereflecteerd door ontelbare kleine stofdeeltjes. De Irisnevel ligt aan het noordelijke einde van een grote en voor het oog onzichtbare moleculaire wolk in een gebied waar betrekkelijk weinig sterformatie plaatsvindt. De centrale ster is een variabele ster en maakt deel uit van een dubbelster systeem. De twee sterren draaien in 3,7 jaar om elkaar heen.
